Climate Equity Collaborative

The Climate Equity Collaborative™ (CEC) is a public-private-partnership that engages nontraditional partners in climate innovation and climate action. Our aim is to engage at the system-level by centering our initiatives on climate education, children’s environmental health, environmental justice, and to construct more on-ramps to the global climate conversation by building impactful partnerships.

Overview

We assist our corporate partners to build programs which address net-zero commitments; future workforce needs; environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG); and equity in our changing global climate. 

While the problems stemming from climate inequity are vast, the CEC is focused on opportunities for children (K-12), college-aged and pre-career youth from underserved groups which are not sufficiently engaged and historically under-resourced in the climate conversation, STEM learning, public health decision-making, and job opportunities.

The Climate Inequity Problem

The impacts of climate change are complex, intersectional, and constantly evolving. Extreme weather, wildfires, and flash floods feel more frequent. These instances put a strain on infrastructure and health systems, and amplify existing systemic inequities.

Current Gaps in Addressing Climate Change for Communities

1. Lack of “ecosystem” of partners united to lift up solutions from youth and frontline communities to catalyze action on intersectional public health and climate crises.
2. Limited opportunities for young climate leaders, especially those in minority-serving colleges and universities, to compete in the 21st century workforce.
3. Inequitable access to financial resources, and community-informed input, to implement scalable, community-based solutions.
4. Accessible digital platforms and technical tools to create scalable change and learning in communities and beyond.

Strategies to Address These Gaps

1. Partnerships:

• Convenes innovative, strategic partnerships with governmental agencies, nonprofit organizations, businesses, schools, online climate activists, and local community organizations
• Leverage partnerships to inspire urgent, action-oriented public engagement around reversing climate impacts on children and most vulnerable communities

2. Workforce Readiness:

• Focus on skills development around innovative technologies
• Build bridges to internship and apprenticeship opportunities for youth at partner organizations and agencies
• Promote health, racial, and climate equity through digital literacy

3. Resources:

• Provide equitable compensation for community leaders and organizations by making pass-through funding the standard
• Prioritize grant transparency so stakeholders understand how funds are being distributed in the community

4. Technology:

• Promote digital innovation and accessibility and data-driven solutions in climate education and health to support overburdened communities globally
• Equip researchers and academics with technology to help them better understand, visualize, and communicate climate risk
• Prioritize technology from “grassroots” programs or programs created to help address community issues
• Use stories to explain technology solutions and facilitate collaboration
